Wanstead High School

Wanstead Junior Leadership Team

It is important that as key stakeholders in the school, students are encouraged and given the opportunity to take an active part in the school’s decision making processes. We have a thriving Junior Leadership Team, made up of representatives from every year group. All students on the JLT were selected after a formal application process in keeping with the fact that this is a role that carries with it a lot of responsibility and commitment.

The JLT meets fortnightly, and is divided into 4 committees, all chaired by students:

Fund-raising committee: this helps to decide which charities the school should support, and how best to raise funds. The school is moving away from simply having regular non-uniform days to raise money, and is trying out more innovative ideas such as raffles, bake sales and selling Valentine cards. Funds were raised for several nominated charities last academic year, including: The Teenage Cancer Trust, Young Minds and Care for Calais. The JLT is looking to continue and extend its fundraising work this year.

Teaching and Learning committee: this gives students another way of feeding back to us about how they learn best, what works well, and what they might like to see more of in the future. Students also meet with senior leaders with responsibility for teaching and learning, to inform planning for future whole-school teaching and learning initiatives.

Facilities committee: these students help to keep the senior leadership team informed about what areas around the school should be improved, and what the priorities are. They also review other important issues such as school catering.

Ambassadors: This group of students are responsible for representing the school at public events. They also welcome visitors, act as guides, and for key staff appointments such as Deputy Head teacher, they will be part of an interview panel.
