The Jack Petchey Foundation

Wanstead High School participates in the Jack Petchey Award Scheme which recognises, rewards and celebrates the achievements of young people in a practical and positive way.  Whether this is through overcoming personal adversity, volunteering to help others or showing great dedication to sport or a subject.

Staff nominate any student who they feel meets any of the criteria and then students from the Junior Leadership Team go through the nominations to select the relevant number of winners.  There are 9 awards in total available throughout the school year.  The winning students receive a certificate and a pin badge and then in November the students are invited to an awards ceremony which is held at the Town Hall in Ilford to collect a medallion.

Jack Petchey was born in the East End in 1925.  He established the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999 and his businesses have given over £100 million to support youth projects.  Jack seeks to  increase young people’s aspirations by rewarding their achievements and encouraging them to take pride in what they have done.  In 2012, Jack was awarded the CBE in recognition of his  services to young people and  at 90 he still goes into the office every day!
